Mike Canes

Mike died a few months ago after falling in his home and injuring his head.  I saw him a few times over the past few years and always enjoyed his company.  A good guy and in his day a very good athlete.

I knew Mike at Cubberley, Foothill College, and San Jose State.  At SJS, he introduced me to Lee Evans and Tommy Smith., the athletes who gave the Black Power salute at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

Mike was like that.  He was gregarious and always pleasant to be around.

When he moved from Auberry to Fresno in 2022, I tried to get in touch with him, hoping to have lunch and talk over old times.  We never did make contact.  He was a great guy, and I'm sorry to learn of his demise.

I was sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I never saw him after High School, but I remember him as an exceptional athlete, in both football and track. In track & field he could challenge any of us in running events from the hundred to the half mile and usually win. He excelled in the 220, 440, 880, and high jump. There was one meet in 1959  where he even took second in the shot put. It was his first and only effort in that event.
